As the Internet has grown larger and more complex, the number of threats that exist against regular Internet users has spread rapidly. Regular PC maintenance can go a long way, but it is also important to have protection against not just viruses, but phishing, malware, spam, identity theft, and a horde other ubiquitous threats that can compromise your online safety. When disaster strikes, it is vital to have a way to recover quickly, and this is most easy to accomplish if you have an automated backup and restoring system.

You could go out and try to address each of the above threats with a different software program, or you can get a comprehensive security suite such as Norton 360. We recommend doing the later, and while Norton’s products aren’t the cheapest when compared to certain competitors, the company is generally considered to be a leader in providing among the best computer security products. In fact, according to a recent PC Magaine Article, Norton 360 as well as Norton Internet Security get among the highest marks for security products in 2012. Having used quite a few security products over the years, we can comfortably recommend Norton’s products as being among the best of its kind.

Norton offers 3 main products – Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Internet Security, and Norton 360. Because Norton 360 provides the highest level of protection, it is the best program to get if computer security is an important concern for you. Although it is the most expensive program of the 3, you can bring down the price quite a bit by using the Norton 360 coupons listed above.

Which should you choose, Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, or Norton Anti-Virus?

You know you need a security program to protect you while your on the Internet – but which program is right for you, given your specific needs and your budget? Admittedly, if you go to many websites that sell security software, they each have at least 2 or 3 different programs, each of which seem to have a certain amount of overlap. To the casual buyer, things can get quite confusing.

At a bare minimum, to get adequate protection, you must have at least 3 things:

Since Norton Anti-Virus only has a inbound firewall similar to what Windows already offers, we do not recommend it unless you are on a very tight budget and have little choice. As we mentioned earlier, the best protection is offered by Norton 360, but Norton Internet Security is also a very good product. However, given that Norton 360 only costs a few dollars more per year compared to Norton Internet Security (after the relevant Norton 360 coupon has been applied), we believe it by far gives you the most for your money

Are small online retailers destined to a similar fate? Today, a small ecommerce store must compete against the likes of Amazon, Walmart, Overstock, and plenty of other large online vendors. And again, the main issue that makes it difficult for smaller sites to compete effectively is the rock bottom prices large competitors are able to offer.

There has definitely been some backlash in recent years, and in the brick and mortar world, quite a few buyers have begun shopping at local stores instead of large national retail chains. Some people have been equally diligent about buying from small Internet vendors, even if it means paying a higher price. A desire to stand up against what is perceived as big-store bullying is an often cited reason for this trend.

While it is true that you might end up paying a bit more by purchasing from a small site, there are definitely certain advantages to buying from small online stores as well:

• Small stores often give you more personal attention
  The personal attention and superior customer service available at smaller sites was recently covered in a New York Times blog titled Can a Small Retailer Compete Online With the Big Boys? Make no mistake – it can be very difficult for small sites to compete against retail giants. But in the case of the infant clothing store Little Dudes and Divas, offering great, personalized service and focusing on things other than just price seems to be a formula that maximizes success.
• Hard-to-find products are usually easier to get at small, niche sites
  If you run a small ecommerce site, it is almost a necessity to find a small niche, become an expert in it, and offer unusual products that are more difficult to find at large retail sites. Although many online consumers flock to Amazon or Barnes and Nobles to buy books, movies, or other common items, they are just as likely to turn to smaller sites when they are looking for something more obscure, such as a rare vitamin supplement.

The Internet also gives small businesses the ability to set up shop at a much lower cost, and benefit from a whole range of tools designed to help them succeed. For example, many large Internet companies actually make it easier for small vendors to sell to customers. Ebay is probably the best example of this, where thousands of power sellers make a living selling their products to the millions of well-established Ebay buyers. Even Amazon offers small businesses the ability to sell products to their existing customers. Note, however, that both sites do take a cut of the gross transaction, so conducting business through such channels does incur an additional cost for the small business owner.

In our experience, we have found that shoppers who are primarily focused on obtaining bargains will generally favor sites, where they can get the best price possible and use online coupons to further bring down their costs. With that said, don’t discount small shops if you are looking for unusual products or if your preference is for more personalized service.

1. Compare Prices

   The Internet makes price comparisons amazingly easy to perform. The best way to go about making quick price comparisons is by using a comparison shopping site, such as Google Shopping or Bizrate. To use these sites, all you need to do is type in the name of the product you want to buy. You will then see a list of numerous stores offering that product, along with prices, shipping costs, and other relevant information. The lowest priced vendor is not always the one you should select by default, and you should definitely take seller ratings into account as well. If a seller has low ratings, it may be a good idea to choose another seller, even if they charge a slightly higher price. If you are using Google Shopping, we recommend only using sellers with ratings of 4 stars or above.

2. Buy Used Goods

   Just about everything is sold used on the Internet, including electronics, books, furniture and even clothes. But if you are like most people, you are probably a bit picky about what you are willing to buy second-hand. Some excellent items you can buy used on the Internet are DVDs, music, and books. Amazon, for example, has many used book sellers who sell books for as little as $0.99. Another great site for buying used books, cds, and movies is Half.com, which is run by Ebay.

   If you are facing hard times and don’t mind buying clothes and furniture online as well, your bet bets are Ebay and Craigslist.

3. Track Deal-A-Day Sites

   The most famous site in this category is Groupon, which will offer you a deal a day for local businesses and events. There are plenty of other sites as well, such as Woot and 1saleaday, which both offer common retail products like watches and electronic goods at great prices. Visiting many such sites on a daily basis can quickly become a hassle, so we recommend using sites like Dealsucker, which allows you to view dozens of items offered by various deal-a-day sites, all in one place.

4. Use Online Coupons

   Finally, get in the habit of searching for online coupons for everything you buy. You can search for online coupons using the product name or store name, followed by the word “coupon.” Thus, you can go to your favorite search engine and type in phrases like “ipod coupons” or “officemax coupons.” This combination of keywords yields many results, and you’ll be surprised at how many sites offer coupons for the exact item or store you are interested in.

   Once you start searching for coupons regularly, you will begin to notice that many of the same coupon sites keep popping up in the search results. If you find a site you like in particular, make sure you bookmark it so you can go directly to it in the future to hunt for coupons.

If you have never purchased a refurbished product, you may be wondering what exactly they are. In simple terms, a refurbished product is a used or returned product that has been restored to like-new condition by the manufacturer. Contrary to what many people believe, refurbished products are not necessarily defective items at all, and can often be products that served as demos or floor models. In other instances, they can be items that were returned for reasons that have nothing to do with the product’s actual working condition. It is important to note that there are many reasons a consumer may return a perfectly good electronic item, such as compatibility issues with other products they own. Sometimes, an item will even be returned unopened. Due to legal reasons, retailers are not allowed to sell any returned items as “new,” and for this reason, these products end up being resold as refurbished items.

There is no way for a consumer to know the reason why a product is being sold as a refurbished product. If you are lucky, you may get an item that is essentially new, but in other cases you may get a product that was initially faulty and had to be repaired. Whatever the case may be, the key point to remember is that so long as an item is marked as “manufacturer refurbished,” they are restored at the factory by the manufacturer itself, and its working condition should be similar if not identical to that of a brand new product. Sometimes, a major retail store will provide refurbished items as well, and such products are typically marked as “seller refurbished.”

Another factor that mitigates the risk of buying refurbished products is that quite a few manufacturers will offer warranties that match or come close to the warranties offered for brand new products. This, however, is an area where you will need to read the fine print and do your own research since the terms of any warranty, if provided, will vary greatly depending on the manufacturer.

What makes refurbished items especially enticing to consumers is the fact that they are usually very aggressively priced. Though the discount you receive will vary from product to product, savings of 15% or more are quite common. To give you a better idea of just how big your savings can be, here are a list of some refurbished products we found, and how they were priced compared to new items.

If you are sold on buying refurbished items, the next question on your mind may be how to shop for them. In almost all cases, using the Internet is your best bet for accessing a wide selection of refurbished goods. Many manufacturers like Apple and Dell have their own online stores that sells refurbished goods.  You can also turn to Ebay to find a good number of sellers that offer refurbished products. Keep in mind, however, that some refurbished items on Ebay are seller refurbished instead of manufacturer refurbished. As always, when using Ebay, you should use common sense precautions such as checking a seller’s feedback rating and return policy before making purchase.

We recommend checking the manufacturer’s website first to see if they sell refurbished items directly to consumers.  If a refurbished product is not available directly from a manufacturer, then the second best option it to buy a seller refurbished product from a large, reputable store. For example, Gamestop sells seller refurbished gaming consoles at prices that are even lower than what manufacturers charge for refurbished products.

Sites like Quibids are called penny auction sites, and there are quite a few of them. Make no mistake, the possibility of buying popular products like iPads and flat-screen TVs at ultra low prices is definitely enticing. But unfortunately, as you might guess, it is also too good to be true. There is one big catch to using penny auction sites, which is that each bid you place costs you money, usually somewhere between $0.50 cents and $1.00. For Quibids, each bid will cost you $0.60. Whenever you place a bid on a product, the price for that product goes up by a penny. An online clock then counts down until the auction ends. If someone places a new bid, the countdown clock is reset.

Depending on the product you are trying to purchase, you may have to bid on an item hundreds times or more in order to have a realistic chance at winning. And there is no guarantee you will win the auction either. Therefore, by the time you actually “win” something, chances are good that you will have spent much more in bids than the cost of the product itself.

The best way to illustrate the actual cost of items you buy on Quibids is by looking at some examples. In the commercial above, the actress mentions that a typical deal you can get at Quibids is an iPad for $23.74 or a Honda Civic for $1800. Since each auction starts at $0.00, below is a breakdown of the actual price paid by bidders before a winner emerged.

The examples above show that on average, consumers on Quibids end up spending 3 to 7 times the cost of the product in bids. You may get lucky and win a product with the first bid you place, but on the other hand, you may go a long time without winning anything, during which time you will no doubt buy and use up a lot of bids. Many people have therefore compared using penny auction sites to gambling.

One thing you need to be careful about with penny auction sites is that there are quite a few scams out there. In the last couple years, several businesses have been busted for engaging in shady business practices. The most common scam run by unethical penny auction sites involves using computer programs to place phony bids to raise the price of an item and keep an auction going longer than it normally would. While the government does its best to crack down on such sites, it is impossible to catch every single one, and the fact of the matter is that there are probably a good number of sites out there that are getting away with flagrantly defrauding its customers.

One final thing to note is that while both Quibids and Ebay are called auction sites, they are not alike at all. For one thing, Quibids sells items directly to consumers to make money, while Ebay offers an exchange that allows other people to sell their items. Additionally, bids on Ebay do not cost anything, while on Quibids, you must make a minimum purchase of $60 worth of bids to start using their system.

Despite the fact that sites like Quibids end up costing consumers a lot of money, they are still highly popular and will likely remain so for a long time to come. Our advice: If you are addicted to auctions, stick to Ebay. It might not be as thrilling as getting an iPad for “just $23.74,” but in the long run, you will save a lot of money by not using any penny auction sites.

In general, larger shopping comparison sites with numerous online stores in their network will provide you with better opportunities to save money. Here are some of the top shopping comparison sites, and our rating of each one.

• Google Shopping
  
  Formerly known as Froogle, Google shopping is probably our favorite shopping comparison site. In our independent tests, this site frequently generated the lowest prices for many different types of products. The interface is easy to use, and many vendors are represented, including some very small store that aren’t typically listed on other sites. The shopping results page includes active listings on Ebay. Customer ratings of vendors are also available.
• Bizrate
  
  We like this site since it is extremely easy to use with an intuitive interface, and there are not very many ads. It is almost as good as Google in terms of representing a diverse number of sellers. The results page can be filtered based on price, brand, and many other factors. 
• Yahoo Shopping 
  
  Yahoo Shopping’s results pages are often populated with highly visible vendors such as Amazon and Buy.com, and they do not include too many small vendors, which is unfortunate since smaller online stores are frequently the ones that offer the best prices. On the other hand, if you are primarily interested in purchasing from the largest and most trusted web stores, then this is a great site to use.
• Pricegrabber
  
  This site is similar to Google Shopping in that it provides seller ratings and listings by smaller online stores. But it generally displays a fewer number of sellers than Google, so we’d recommend using Google instead of Pricegrabber. The site is also a bit heavy with ads.
• Shopzilla
  
  Using Shopzilla can be hit or miss, depending on the product you are shopping for. The site is clean, fast, and does not have too many ads. It is worth checking out if you don’t get the results you want at some of the larger comparison sites. They have a weird smiley face system for rating sellers, and we personally prefer star ratings as they are easier to comprehend.
• Nextag
  
  While they have a nice website, we frankly think you’ll get better results and find lower prices by using some of the larger comparison sites. Overall, Nextag seemed a bit bland and did not do much for us.
• DealTime
   
  Dealtime was a bit slow at generating results when we tested it, compared to the other sites on this list. It has a decent number of vendors and good filters, but we recommend using a more popular comparison site before you hit this one.

Although there are at least a dozen other major comparison shopping sites in addition to the ones on this page, the ones listed above are the most prominent. As of yet, we are unaware of any sites that amalgamate data from different comparison sites, similar to what Kayak does for the travel industry. Perhaps such a tool will eventually surface, but for the time being, if you visit even one or two of the sites above, you are almost certain to find deals that are among the best you can find anywhere on the Web.

1. What is the best way to find online coupons?
   There are generally two methods you can use to find online coupons. The first is to go to sites like Coupon Jungle or Coupon Cabin, and browse for coupons or search for a specific offer using the search field. The second method is to use a search engine such as Google. To find coupons using a search engine, you should type in the vendor or product, followed by the word "coupon." Therefore, to find coupons for Medifast, you would type in “Medifast coupons” into the search field. Note that while you will get plenty of results using this method, many coupons will be expired, so you will likely have to visit a few sites before you find a coupon that is currently valid.
2. Do I need a coupon code to activate a coupon?
   While some offers require a coupon code, many do not. If a coupon code is required to redeem a coupon, you will typically be asked to type in or paste the code into a field when you are checking out. A typical shopping cart checkout screen that accepts coupon codes is shown below: 
    
3. Do I need a credit card to make purchases online?
   The simple answer is yes. However, note that you can use Visa Prepaid cards or Paypal at most vendors, so you do not necessarily need a traditional credit card to make purchases online. 4. Do online stores accept returns?
   Yes, and you should therefore not hesitate to purchase from online outlets, as there is little to no risk if you are not satisfied with a product. Many vendors will pay for return shipping should you decide to return an item, but not all of them do this, so it’s best to check the terms and conditions at the store you are buying from.
5. How risky is shopping on the Internet?
   The risk of identity theft or stolen credit card information is extremely low if you shop at well known websites. This is because top Internet vendors use highly reliable security technology, and all personal information you send to the website is encrypted and unreadable by third parties.
6. How can I tell if an online store is trustworthy?
   There are several things you can do to ensure that you are shopping at a reputable store. First, you can check if that business is listed with the Better Business Bureau. Sites sometimes display seals for the BBB or other organizations they belong to. They may also display a seal that indicates that they use safe shopping technology. Below are some examples of seals that are displayed on reputable online stores:
   
   Another thing you can do is find stores through shopping comparison sites such as Bizrate or Google Shopping. In addition to showing you the prices various sellers charge for a product, these sites also allow customers to rate vendors. Simply avoid the stores that have a low rating, and you should be fine.

One of the best options for people who don’t have a credit card is to obtain a prepaid credit card or a Visa gift card.  You can obtain Visa gift cards at many retail outlets, or you may also purchase them online through websites like Gift Card Mall. Once you have your card, you can use it just as you would an ordinary credit card. Be aware that there may be a small fee (usually $3.95) when you purchase a gift card or prepaid card. Despite this, using gift cards is probably the quickest and easiest way for someone without a credit card to make a purchase online.

If you have a checking account, a better idea is to simply get a debit card. Most debit cards can be used just like a regular credit card, and the purchase amount will automatically be deducted from your account. There is usually no extra fee to use a debit card, and it offers more flexibility compared to gift cards since you do not have to purchase them in pre-determined denominations.

Many major online shopping outlets such as Ebay accept Paypal as a method of payment. To open an account, you need to have a bank account that will be linked with your Paypal account. However, since Paypal is not as widely accepted as credit cards, in most cases you are better off just getting a debit card from your bank. Having a Paypal account, however, does make it easier to make multiple purchases from different vendors since you don’t have to enter in your credit card information again each time you buy something from a seller that accepts Paypal.

In some ways, not being able to use a credit card for online purchases can be a blessing. For one thing, it forces you to have the cash on hand before making a purchase. Given that the average household credit card debt in the nation is over $15,000, it’s clear that most of us would be better off relying less on our credit cards. Therefore, even if you have access to credit cards, it is probably wiser to get in the habit of making online purchases using the methods discussed in this article.

That said, here are some ways you can quickly sell your games online:

1. Sell it on Glyde
   Glyde is a marketplace for buying and selling used games, movies, and other electronic items. The most notable thing about this site is that it makes selling games as easy as possible for you. All you need to do is list the game, and wait for someone to purchase it. Once it sells, Glyde will send you a pre-stamped mailer you can use to send out the game. Payment is issued after your buyer receives the game.
2. Sell it to Gamestop or Amazon
   If you are hoping for a quick, both Gamestop and Amazon will buy your game from you directly. How much you get for your game depends on different factors, such as the level of demand for a given game, how old it is, and what kind of condition the game is in. Generally, you can expect to get around 50 – 60% of the full retail price for your title.
3. Sell it on Ebay
   Compared to using Glyde, selling on Ebay takes slightly more work, and you may or may not be able to get a better price since price competition on Ebay is so fierce. I would personally prefer to use Glyde as the site seems streamlined for selling video games, but if you already have an Ebay account and are more comfortable with Ebay, this is still a great channel for selling games. If you offer games using the "Buy It Now” feature, you will probably have no problem selling them at around 70 – 80% of retail value. Alternatively, you can set up an auction, let it run for a week, and see how much your game brings in.
4. Donate it
   If you are feeling charitable, you can donate your games to Goodwill or any number of other outlets, such as Donate Games, a site that will provide your games to children with rare diseases. When possible, try to keep some kind of record of your donation, as this may entitle you to get a tax write off.

If you find yourself selling games frequently, then one thing to consider is getting a Gamefly account. This way, you can rent games by mail, send them back when you are sick of playing them, and immediately receive other games that are on a queue that you maintain online. You can do this as often as you like so long as you are a member. Membership fees for Gamefly start at $15.95 a month for 1 game out, or $22.95 for 2 games out. If you are the type of person who buys more than 4 or 5 games a year, then the cost of a Gamefly membership will be less than the amount you spend annually on games, and you will be able to enjoy a greater variety of games by having a membership.

For whatever reason, you may find yourself in a situation where you want to get rid of some gift cards. Fortunately, the Internet offers quite a few novel solutions to such gift card related dilemmas. Here are some ideas for what to do should you have more gift cards than you want or need.

1. Sell Your Gift Card
   Sites like Plastic Jungle make it easy for you to sell your gift card for a cashier’s check or a deposit into your Paypal account. The downside is that you won’t get the full value of your card. Usually, you can expect to be paid 70 – 90% of the value of your card.  All you need to do is enter in your gift card number, then mail in your gift card to the specified address to receive your payment.
2. Exchange your Card
   Since Plastic Jungle also sells gift cards that are discounted up to 20%, it’s a great place to swap your card as well. To do this, simply sell the card the usual way, and once you have your funds, go back to the site and  make a purchase for a card of similar value.
3. Re-Gift the Card
   This may strike you as a tacky thing to do, and it can be if you just hand someone else a gift card that you don’t need, knowing the other person will have no need for it either. But when this is not the case, it is just a smart way to give away a card to someone who will put it to better use. For example, if you have no interest in music and receive an iTunes card, it is acceptable, in our opinion, to give that card as a gift to someone whom you know is a music lover.
4. Donate the Card
   Believe it or not, many charities accept gift cards as donations. One such charity is GiftKards4Kids. In addition to supporting a worthy cause, gift card donations are also tax deductible. You don’t have to donate unused cards only. If you have a stack of cards with only a few dollars on each, and don’t expect to use them up, donating the cards is a great way to get rid of them.
5. See it on Ebay
   Admittedly, this takes a bit more work than just selling your card to Plastic Jungle, but it might be worth it since you’ll come closer to selling your card at full face value.
